As a parent, nothing breaks your heart more than seeing your toddler or young child scared or anxious, especially about something that’s good for them. Like swimming lessons.

While you understand the many benefits associated with enrolling them in lessons, they may not share your enthusiasm.

Maybe they come up with creative excuses not to go?

Maybe they refuse to leave the house?

Maybe the fear is too much, and they simply won’t get in the water?

Or maybe the waterworks hit when they enter the pool, refusing to let go of Mum or Dad?

If any of these scenarios sound familiar, you’re not alone.

It’s completely normal for toddlers and young children to feel apprehensive about beginning swimming classes, especially if being in the water is new to them or if they’ve had a scary experience in a pool.

While it’s frustrating, the first thing to remember is that their feelings need to be validated.  Whether we understand their fears or not, it’s important we don’t dismiss how they feel and force them into something that genuinely scares them.

Just like any other childhood fear, being afraid of the water is perfectly normal. To your little one, the water is a scary unknown — a strange place that they may feel trapped in, with no way out.

Remember to be patient.  While their fear of the water is normal, you may never know exactly what triggered it.

So, how can you help your precious little one to embrace the pool, and their passion for swimming?

  • Validate their feelings

Let them know that what they are expressing is normal, and that you’re not angry at them for feeling that way.

It’s okay to be scared! Simply knowing they’ve been heard might be enough to calm them down. To better understand why they are afraid, try asking leading questions, like, “How do you feel when you are swimming?”.

These questions will help a child to answer in a way that aligns with their thoughts and feelings, so you can better support them.

  • Update the school

It’s incredibly important to tell your swimming school and class teacher if your little one is experiencing stress and anxiety about their lessons.

We certainly want to know at The Swim Factory! Not only can we provide you with advice, tips, and support, but it also helps our teachers to understand each child’s concerns so we can be aware of them in class.

  • Observe a few lessons together

Your little one may feel more relaxed if they know exactly what to expect. So, ask your swim school if you could watch a lesson or two before they start their block. This should help to alleviate some of the fears.

  • Reward appropriately

Toddlers and small children respond well to rewards for positive behaviour. Consider incentivising them with lunch at their favourite café or a small treat or prize if they fulfil a goal. That goal may be as simple as getting into the water without fears. After all, half the battle is showing up and getting in. Baby steps are fine.

  • Practice at home

If you find your child is struggling with their lessons, practicing at home in the bath or shower could boost their confidence.

Do you have a friend with a pool? A casual swim together could also work wonders.  As a bonus, if you’re enrolled with The Swim Factory, you can use our pools for free during designated free swimming times. Just one of the many perks! Check out the timetable: (https://www.swimfactoryaustralia.com.au/timetables).

  • Don’t stop lessons

Describe the item or answer the question so that site visitors who are interested get more information. You can emphasize this text with bullets, italics or bold, and add links.

Work with your teacher and swim school and together you can move your little swimmer from anxious to confident.

Fun fact. When babies come into the world, they’re generally quite acclimatised and readily accepting of water. Many may lose their sense of bravery in the water at around the age of one.
