FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I join?

We welcome all new swimmers to The Swim Factory with a FREE trial lesson or assessment. This trial allows our experienced staff to assess the ability of each individual and recommend the most suitable level.

The trial lesson also gives you the opportunity to see how we operate our swimming lessons and ask any questions relating to the syllabus.

Enrollments are taken all year round, so there is no need to wait until the beginning of a new term to join.

  • Is there a best time to start swimming lessons?

Now is the best time to start swimming lessons. We welcome swimmers into our classes at all times throughout the year and there is no need to wait for the start of a new term.

With a variety of lessons ranging from just 3 months of age to adults, it is never too early or late to start swimming.

  • What days and times do you have available?

Lessons operate 7 days a week at our Springfield Central location and Monday - Saturday at Ipswich. With so many classes available, our friendly admin staff can assist you in finding the day and time that suits your family.

  • How many lessons do you recommend each week?

Regular and consistent swim lessons will help you or your child to enjoy the water and learn how to be safe in and around the aquatic environment.

Attending one lesson per week is a minimum requirement in our swim program. As an optimum, we recommend two lessons per week to accelerate the skill development in learning to swim and drowning prevention.

Discounts are available to students swimming more than one lesson per week.

  • Do you operate year round?

Yes! With indoor, heated pools we are able to operate all year round regardless of the weather. Lessons also continue through school holidays with the Swim Factory only closing for 3-weeks over Christmas and 1-week over Easter.

During most school holidays, we also offer week-long intensive swimming programs in addition to regular lessons.

  • Why should I continue swimming lessons throughout winter?

We encourage year round participation in all of our classes. Continuation throughout the cooler months assists students in the development and retention of valuable water safety and swimming skills. Those who swim all year round retain a healthy respect for the water and develop skills that often surpass seasonal swimmers.

  • What do I bring to lessons?

You will need your swimmers, towel, and a change of clothes for after the lesson. Infants are required to wear swim nappies beneath their swimmers and parents or carers in the pool are asked to wear a T-shirt over swimmers. Children are encouraged to bring a swim cap and goggles and squad swimmers are recommended to bring a water bottle.

A range of swimming accessories including caps, goggles, swim nappies and flippers can be purchased from The Swim Factory office.

  • Why do parents and carers need to wear T-shirts in swim classes?

Infants need to learn to grasp on independently to the edge of the pool, a railing, or anything they can pull themselves up on from the water level. When practising this skill in swim lessons, infants and toddlers are taught to ‘grasp on’ to the parent or carer's T-shirt.

  • Do you offer make-up lessons?

Yes, we offer make-up lessons if you contact us prior to missing your scheduled lesson. Make-up lessons can be booked up to a week in advance and can be arranged within six weeks of the cancellation. Make-up lessons cannot be rescheduled if missed, and cannot be used for credit in future months.

  • What level will my child be in?

Swimmers in each class are generally of a similar age and have each been assessed on their swimming ability. At your FREE trial lesson, our experienced staff assess the ability of each individual and are able to recommend the most suitable level.

Students are continually monitored and can progress to the next level as soon as they are ready - there is no need to wait until the end of term for an assessment.

When your child is ready for the next level, they will receive a certificate and you will be notified to reschedule your class.

  • Why does The Swim Factory not teach with flotation aids?

Flotation aids give young children a false sense of security and confidence in the water. Our teaching program is designed to teach children to swim with their own buoyancy. We believe it is safer for an infant or young child to know their own buoyancy and develop caution in the water while building their water confidence.

  • Why do parents need to stay to watch the class?

Parents watching their children learn to swim have an important role in building their child’s confidence by praising their efforts from the viewing area. Also, as a safety measure, parents need to supervise siblings who are not in the pool. We do not have a lifeguard on duty and our swim instructors are focused on their class.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

While there are no additional enrollment or cancellation fees, notice of all cancellations are required two weeks prior to the next direct debit payment date to stop lessons at the end of the month.

  • Are the pools heated?

All of our pools are indoors and heated all year round. We also provide comfortable viewing areas and change areas with heating in the winter and cooling in the summer months.
